HBOT's Impact on Boosting Physical Performance in Aging Adults.
Aging often brings a decline in physical activity, but new research highlights a promising intervention: intermittent Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). In a recent study of sedentary older adults aged 64+, a 12-week HBOT protocol significantly improved physical and cardiovascular performance.
Participants underwent 60 sessions over three months, breathing 100% oxygen at 2 ATA for 90 minutes daily.
Key Findings:
Improved VO2Max: Participants experienced a 1.91 ml/kg/min increase in maximal oxygen consumption, boosting physical endurance.
Enhanced Cardiac Perfusion: Both blood flow and blood volume to the heart saw large gains, with net effect sizes of 0.797 and 0.896, respectively.
Increased Oxygen Utilization: Oxygen consumption at the first ventilatory threshold (VO2VT1) increased significantly, demonstrating improved efficiency.

WHAT IS HBOT?
HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) involves breathing in oxygen pressurized by up to 3 times higher than normal oxygen pressure.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
By providing oxygen under higher pressure, approx 5-10 x more oxygen is dissolved into the plasma and is available to the tissues in the body. Normally courses of 15-20 treatments are required for resolution of the condition
