Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can play a valuable role as an adjunctive treatment for patients with non-healing diabetic wounds.
Chronic diabetic foot ulcers remain one of the most challenging complications of diabetes, often leading to infection, hospitalization, and ultimately amputation. Emerging clinical evidence continues to demonstrate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can play a valuable role as an adjunctive treatment for patients with non-healing diabetic wounds.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials evaluating HBOT in diabetic foot ulcer management found that patients receiving adjunct hyperbaric oxygen therapy experienced significantly improved wound healing outcomes compared with standard care alone. The analysis also demonstrated a substantial reduction in major amputations among patients treated with HBOT.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by increasing the concentration of dissolved oxygen in plasma, allowing oxygen to reach ischemic tissues that would otherwise remain hypoxic. This enhanced oxygen delivery has been shown to support several key mechanisms involved in wound repair, including improved angiogenesis, enhanced collagen synthesis, increased leukocyte bacterial killing, and improved tissue perfusion in compromised wounds.
For patients with diabetic foot ulcers that are slow to respond to conventional wound care, HBOT may offer an additional therapeutic option that can improve healing outcomes and potentially reduce the risk of limb loss.
If you’d like to learn more about this case or discuss how HBOT might support other patients, please feel free to reach out.
WHAT IS HBOT?
HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) involves breathing in oxygen pressurized by up to 3 times higher than normal oxygen pressure.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
By providing oxygen under higher pressure, approx 5-10 x more oxygen is dissolved into the plasma and is available to the tissues in the body. Normally courses of 15-20 treatments are required for resolution of the condition
